Toruń

The second largest city in the Kujawy-Pomerania Province. It is located on the Vistula and Drwęca rivers. Toruń, with over 200,000 inhabitants, is Poland’s sixteenth-largest city. Toruń is developing dynamically and does not give way to other Polish cities in terms of being a significant economic and commercial center as well as a famous road and rail junction. The Pomeranian Special Economic Zone operates under Toruń.

Historical trivia

Toruń is one of the oldest cities in Poland (it obtained city rights in 1232). In the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Toruń was one of the four largest and at the same time one of the wealthiest cities in the Kingdom of Poland, a royal and Hanseatic city, which in 1365 obtained the staple right. It had autonomous political rights, including the right to active participation in the act of electing the monarch. Toruń is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus.
In 1997, the Old Town Complex was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
 

Culture and recreation in the city

Toruń is an important academic, scientific, cultural and tourist center as well. The city has a symphony orchestra and theatres, cinemas, numerous museums and art galleries. The national and international sporting events constitute further boost to the city’s development; some of the key events take place in:
